How Poor Roof Ventilation Sneaks Up on Your Home
By Charles Kearns | Owner, Quality Roof Pros | Brick Township NJ | ~6 min read
Poor roof ventilation causes three problems: ice dams in winter (warm attic melts snow that refreezes at the eave), premature shingle failure (heat-baked shingles age 30-40% faster), and high cooling bills (attic temps over 130F push heat into living space). Fix is usually $800-$2,500 to add or balance ridge vent and soffit vent intake. (732) 770-3867 for a free attic check.

Signs of Bad Ventilation
Ice dams every winter. Attic over 130F in summer. Shingles cupping or curling before year 12. Mildew smell in the attic. Cooling bills running 20%+ higher than similar homes.
How Proper Ventilation Works
Cool air enters through soffit vents at the eaves. Warm air exits through ridge vent at the peak. The continuous flow keeps attic temps within 10-15F of outside.
Imbalanced ventilation (ridge vent without enough soffit intake, or vice versa) doesn't work. The air can't flow.
What the Fix Costs
Adding ridge vent during a roof replacement: usually included in our standard scope. As a standalone project: $400-$900.
Adding or clearing soffit vents: $300-$1,200 depending on access and number of bays.
