Shingle Damage in NJ - What Causes It and How to Slow It Down
By Charles Kearns | Owner, Quality Roof Pros | Brick Township NJ | ~7 min read
Four things damage shingles fastest in NJ: wind (50+ mph events lift tabs and break the seal strip), hail (bruises the mat under the granules), UV combined with poor attic ventilation (bakes the asphalt from underneath), and installation quality (4-nail patterns instead of 6-nail on coastal homes fail in nor'easters). Owens Corning Duration Storm shingles are rated for 130 mph winds and include a polymer impact layer that resists hail bruising. As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, we install Duration Storm with the 6-nail pattern required on Ocean County coastal homes. Free inspection at (732) 770-3867.

Wind Damage - Where It Starts
Wind damage almost always starts at the edges and tabs - not in the middle of the field. From the ground you may not see it. The seal strip releases first, then the next storm lifts the tab fully.
Once a tab is unsealed, every wind event makes it worse. By month three, water is getting under the shingle and to the underlayment.
Hail Damage - Bruises vs Granule Loss
Hail damage looks like circular bruises with the granules knocked off. The mat under the granules is dented but not punched through. Different from age-related granule loss, which is uniform across the slope.
Hail bruises shorten shingle life by 5-10 years even if there's no immediate leak.
UV and Heat
South- and west-facing slopes age faster than north- and east-facing on the same roof - sometimes by 5+ years. The combination of UV and a hot attic underneath bakes the asphalt and accelerates granule loss.
This is why ventilation matters. See our poor roof ventilation guide.
Installation Quality - The 6-Nail Rule
Standard residential shingles are nailed with 4 nails. Owens Corning requires 6 nails per shingle on coastal installs (within a mile of the coast). The extra two nails roughly double wind resistance.
Most non-credentialed installers don't do the 6-nail upgrade because it adds labor. Verify your contractor's nail pattern before signing.
What Maintenance Actually Helps
Annual gutter cleaning. Removing debris from valleys. Catching minor lifted tabs early. Don't let pressure-washing companies on your roof - they strip granules and void warranties.
